Storylines
Cathy Breton is a 17 year old runaway who joins the cafeteria staff at Salem University Hospital. She meets Maggie Horton Kiriakis who offers to let her stay with her but her husband Mickey Horton opposes. Marie Horton befriends Cathy seeing a reflection of herself in her. Cathy begins dating a hospital intern named Joe Cook, despite Marie's displeasure, and becomes Alex Marshall's maid. Marie warns Alex to stay away from Cathy, but Alex threatens to expose Marie's past. Cathy enters a nursing program with Dr. Tom Horton's financing. Mickey and Maggie eventually allow Cathy to move in with them. Mickey tries and fails to locate Cathy's parents. Cathy becomes interested in Stan Kositchek. She turns to Stan after being rejected by Alex and loses her virginity to him.
In January, Cathy begins experiencing pregnancy symptoms, which are discovered by Sister Marie Horton through her role at the unwed mothers' clinic. Sister Marie starts giving Cathy the cold shoulder, leaving her confused about the sudden change in behavior. Maggie is heartbroken when Cathy moves out to live in a student dorm. In February, Cathy leaves Salem and moves to Chicago where she begins a new job. By April, Marie learns that Cathy is engaged to a Chicago intern.
