Lawrence James Alamain is a character from the soap opera Days of Our Lives, portrayed by Michael Sabatino. The character appeared from 1990 to 1993, and returned for several guest appearances in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Background
Lawrence was born on March 15, 1960 to Leopold and Philomena Alamain, he is also the adoptive brother of John Black. Lawrence, the scion of the powerful European family the Alamains, was introduced as the man Katerina von Leuschner (known to Salemites as Carly Manning) was supposed to be wed in an arranged marriage in 1990. Carly's best friend, Jennifer Horton, masqueraded as Carly in order to invalidate the marriage in 1990 - believing Lawrence had no idea who Carly was. Though Lawrence went through with the wedding, it was revealed he knew all along Jennifer wasn't Katrina, as he (masquerading as a man named James) had an affair with Katrina (masquerading as Carly) when they were teenagers, conceiving a child, Nicholas Alamain, who was raised by Lawrence's aunt Vivian Alamain.
Most of Lawrence's time on the show was marked by his triangle with Carly and her boyfriend, the heroic Bo Brady. Though Bo was a far better man than the often dastardly Lawrence, Carly eventually couldn't deny her love for him and the two were married and left town in 1993 with their son, Nicholas. They were not seen again until 2009, when Carly killed Lawrence in self-defense, for threatening the life of Melanie Jonas, a child she'd conceived in an affair with a colleague, Daniel Jonas. Though he died in 2009, Lawrence has appeared numerous times since then as a ghost to both Carly and his aunt Vivian.
Storylines
Lawrence Alamain came to Salem, looking for Katrina Von Lueshner. Lawrence had met Katrina and said his name was James. They were engaged to be married, so Lawrence could inherit the Von Leushner fortune. Katrina found out the truth and had fled, do Lawrence went looking for her and tracked her down to Salem. Lawrence owned Jencon's Oil, and Shawn Douglas Brady went blind as a result of an accident. Shawn's father Bo Brady was furious and sabotaged Jencon's Oil as the Riverfront Raider in retaliation. Lawrence and Bo briefly met when he broke up a fight between him and Katrina.
Lawrence planned to kill Bo by causing an explosion, but Steve Johnson got caught in it. Steve survived, but was badly injured. Lawrence had Steve's IV poisoned, which appeared to kill him. In actuality Steve's death was faked, and Lawrence handed him over to the DiMera family.
In 1990, one of Lawrence's friends discovered the boarding school that Katarina had attended with Jennifer Horton. Jennifer posed as Katarina to protect her friend, and Lawrence married her, knowing she wasn't Katarina. Lawrence raped Jennifer and held her hostage. He later ended up captuting Jennifer's grandmother Alice Horton, Jack Deveraux, and Francois, Katherina's brother.
Francois was revealed to have taken the name Frankie Brady, and he and Jack escaped the tunnels Lawrence had held his captives in. They found Jennifer, and Frankie explained Lawrence wanted to trade him for the Von Leuschner fortune. The tunnel ended up collapsing, and they escaped with the help of Leopold Alamain, Lawrence's father, who died of a heart attack from the stress soon after.
Lawrence returned to Salem in 1991 to continue his search, and worked with Victor Kiriakis to release a virus. Lawrence became friends with Kimberly Brady, who was an undercover ISA agent, but she developed feelings for him. Jennifer filed charges against Lawrence for raping her, but he claimed to suffer from blackouts and not remember raping her.
Kimberly helped Lawrence learn that the cause if his blackouts were caused by the medication that he thought was for his blood pressure. Instead, it was to suppress his memory of watching his younger brother Forrest Alamain drown. Kimberly discovered a tape of Lawrence admitting to raping Jennifer, and when Jack found the tape, Lawrence was sent to prison.
A year later, Lawrence was released from prison, and sought to redeem himself. Lawrence wanted to give Bo a cure to help with his infection, and a lethal dose was given to Emily Borden instead. Victor wanted to cure Bo, who was his son, so he made a deal with Lawrence to exchange the "John Black" file for the cure. The cure ended up breaking, but Carly Manning was able to save Bo's life.
Vivian Alamain, Lawrence's aunt arrived in Salem and came to live with Lawrence. Vivian saw John Black and noticed the half a locket that was given to Lawrence and Forrest by their mother. Forrest's coffin was delivered to Salem, and when Lawrence and Vivian opened it, they were shocked to discover it was empty. They came to suspect John was Forrest, and kept it a secret since he could take over Vivian's half of Alamain Industries.
John caught Lawrence with Carrie Brady, who had a crush on him. To keep John from shooting him, Lawrence revealed the truth to John, and a DNA test confirmed it, so John took over Vivian's half of Alamain Industries. Lawrence hired a corporate lawyer named Lisanne Gardner to represent Vivian, and slept with her even though he was in love with Carly after learning she was Katarina.
Lisanne learns Carly was pregnant, and Carly tells Lawrence the child belonged to another man. She later reveals the child was Lawrence's, but had died. Vivian brought her adopted son Nikki Alamain to Salem, and Lisanne finds out Nikki is Lawrence and Carly's child that Vivian stole. Nikki accidentally kills Lisanne and Lawrence helps cover it up.
Lawrence eventually learns Nikki is his son and lashes out at Vivian, who suffers from a heart attack. Lawrence tells Carly the the truth about their son and they agree to protect him. Carly and Nikki bond, so Vivian kidnaps him, but Bo locates her and arrests her, bringing them both back to Salem.
Lawrence continues to pursue Carly, and plans to break her and Bo up. He conspires with Taylor McCall, who was Bo's former partner, to frame him for assaulting a drug dealer, but Taylor eventually gives Bo the tape to clear his name. When Carly died, Lawrence was heartbroken, but then he learns Carly never died and had been buried alive by Vivian. Lawrence rescues Carly, turns Vivian into the police and decides to leave town with Nikki. Carly realizes she loves Lawrence and goes with them to be a family.
In October 2009, Carly and Lawrence are heard fighting with Carly saying she didn't realize she had married such a monster, and Lawrence responding that he married such a bitch. Carly slapped Lawrence and they struggled until Carly stabbed Lawrence with a letter opener. A shocked Lawrence glances at Carly, who seems to have no remorse. Carly pulls the letter opening from Lawrence's chest, and he falls to the ground, declaring that Carly will never find, before dying from his wounds. Carly wiped her finger prints off of the letter opening on Lawrence's jacket, and then fled the country.
While travelling to Salem, Carly thought back to the events that led her to stabbing Lawrence, and she started to have hallucinations of him likely due to some sort of guilt she felt for killing him. It was revealed in flashbacks that Carly had had an affair, and Lawrence was threatening to harm Carly's daughter. Carly admitted to Bo that she killed Lawrence because he threatened her daughter. She told Bo that Lawrence had gotten an illness, and when he recovered, he wasn't the same man.
From January to February 2010, Lawrence appeared to Vivian, urging him to kill Carly's daughter, who turned out to Melanie Jonas. It turns out that Melanie was the daughter of Carly and Daniel Jonas. Lawrence had forced Carly to give up her daughter to his friend, Trent Robbins. Lawrence disappeared after Vivian told him she won't kill Melanie, but he appeared to taunt and laugh at Carly, as a manifestation of Carly's grief when she learned Trent had been a terrible father to Melanie.
Lawrence appeared to Vivian in a dream when she was locked on a sarcophagus by Brady Black. He made his final ghostly appearance to Carly after Vivian got her addicted to drugs as part of her revenge. Carly ultimately got clean with the help of Nicholas and Melanie, and Vivian moved on with her life, so the specter of Lawrence disappeared from Carly's life forever.
