Storylines

Nathan came to Salem in June 2009 to start his internship at Salem University Hospital. On his first day, he ran into Melanie Layton and the two started a flirtation which continued when Nathan and Melanie learned that they would be housemates. During his internship, he would be staying with his grandmother, Maggie Horton.

Nathan started a casual flirtation with Melanie, but also started the same casual relationship with Stephanie Johnson. This caused friction between the two women, and angered Philip Kiriakis, who Stephanie had just dumped. But, Nathan soon realized that Stephanie was still in love with Philip, and backed off so that Stephanie and Philip could give it another shot. He focused his attention on Melanie.

The two teamed up to help Daniel Jonas sneak into Chloe's hospital room and administer doses of a drug that Daniel believed would bring Chloe out of her coma. Nathan and Melanie were caught and arrested. But, the charges were dropped when Chloe woke up. The drug had saved her and Nathan and Melanie were heroes. They decided to celebrate by going on a real date.

They were happy for little while, but when Stephanie and Philip broke up, Philip starting looking towards Melanie for attention. Melanie had feelings for both men, but ultimately chose Philip. Nathan began dating Stephanie.

Even though Melanie was married, Stephanie worried that Nathan would never stop having feelings for Melanie. So, when Stephanie learned that Philip had cheated on Melanie, Stephanie schemed to keep Philip's affair quiet so that Melanie would not be single again. Alas, the truth came out because Philip's affair produced a son. Stephanie's part of the cover-up came out as well when Nathan overheard Philip and Stephanie talking. Nathan left Stephanie and went straight to Melanie.

However, Melanie turned Nathan away. She decided that it was best if she was on her own for a while. Nathan knew that he couldn't stay in Salem so he accepted a job in Baltimore with Johns Hopkins Hospital and left Salem in March of 2011.
