Storylines

Thomas Horton Jr., also known as Tommy, was born in 1931 as the eldest son of Tom and Alice Horton. He had a twin sister, Addie Horton, and brothers Mickey Horton, Bill Horton, and sister Marie Horton. Tommy was married to Kitty Horton and fathered a daughter named Sandy Horton. Following in his father's footsteps, he pursued a career in medicine and served in the US Army.

After marrying Kitty in 1951, he was deployed to Korea shortly thereafter, leaving a pregnant Kitty in the United States. During the conflict, Tommy went missing and was presumed dead in 1953.

In 1967, Bill Horton encountered Dr. Mark Brooks, when Bill moved to nearby Pine Grove. When Bill decided to return to Salem, he invited Mark to come along, where he secured a position at University Hospital and fell in love with his research assistant, Marie Horton. Mark felt a strange familiarity with the Horton household, as Alice often expressed a sense of connection to him. Concurrently, Mark experienced nightmares involving Colonel Chengsu, who had tortured him. Unbeknown to him, Tommy had lost his memory but became engaged to Marie. The Horton's began to suspect that Mark was actually Tommy Horton. Mickey discreetly obtained Mark's fingerprints, which astonishingly matched Tommy's. Eventually, Tommy regained memories of his past, revealing that he had been a prisoner of war in Korea in 1956, where he endured severe abuse at the hands of his captors. He escaped with the help of Soviet Colonel Dubovic, who provided him with plastic surgery as a reward. This revelation led to the end of Tommy's engagement with Marie, as he now faced the reality of reconnecting with his wife Kitty and meeting his teenage daughter Sandy.

Tommy's bond with Sandy flourished, leading to a deep connection between them. In contrast, his relationship with Kitty was fraught with difficulties. Initially, Tommy made efforts to salvage his relationship with Kitty, but she had undergone significant changes. She became manipulative and was clearly concealing a secret. To uncover the truth, Tommy engaged a private investigator to monitor Kitty, who revealed that she was involved in an affair with Dr. Elliot Kincaid. When Tommy confronted Kitty outside Elliot's residence, she pretended to suffer a heart attack. Ultimately, Tommy discovered that Kitty had been engaged in multiple relationships beyond Salem and even had a criminal history. This revelation was the final straw, prompting him to divorce Kitty in 1969. Kitty died suddenly not long after an argument with Bill whom Kitty was attempting to blackmail. Tommy supported Sandy through her grief, until Sandy departed Salem in 1971.

After Sandy left Tommy settled into a quiet life in Salem. He didn't get much involved in activities outside his family. In 1977, he commenced a romantic relationship with Linda Phillips, and their bond deepened significantly. As the year drew to a close, Tommy made a proposal of marriage to her. Regrettably for Tommy, Linda was merely leveraging their relationship to attract a proposal from the affluent Bob Anderson. She requested time to contemplate Tommy's offer, while her true intention was to secure a proposal from Bob. Her strategy succeeded, as Linda ultimately accepted Bob's proposal, leaving Tommy devastated.

Tommy was last seen in Salem in 1980, where he attended his parents' 50th wedding anniversary celebration. Shortly thereafter, he relocated to Hawaii and was seldom referenced by his family over the years.

In 2023, during a conversation, Julie noted that Tommy had passed away, although she did not specify the date of his death.
